[Alternative personalized opening: Mountain culture used to refer to heaven as “the sweet by and by.” Anybody remember that phrase? Or the old gospel song “In The Sweet By and By . . ?“ It was made a signature song by three of the greatest country and western singers of all time --- Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton. Here are the lyrics:

[You may have the congregation sing the song as the beginning to your sermon, or have someone sing it for your people.]

There's a land that is fairer than day,
and by faith we can see it afar;

for the Father waits over the way
to prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain:

In the sweet by and by,
we shall meet on that beautiful shore;
in the sweet by and by,
we shall meet on that beautiful shore.

Joseph Webster, an American musician and composer, like many of people, was prone to bouts of depression. And in 1868, before the time of antidepressants or mood stabilizers, you couldn’t do much about it, except stick it out and wait for the wave to pass.

One day, Webster’s friend, writer Sanford Bennett, came by and found him quietly hunched over his desk, a dark mood clearly clouding his countenance, and Bennett kindly asked him if he was alright.

Webster replied, “I will be by and by.”

At those words, Bennett exclaimed, “You know, that phrase would make a great song –in the by and by, in the sweet by and by.” With that, Webster and Bennett both got to work. Bennett wrote the lyrics, and Webster the song. And the well-known hymn was born.

Anyone here know what that phrase means? “In the sweet by and by”? Is no one here from the South?

[Allow people to answer.]

The phrase “by and by” by itself refers to an unspecified future time and place, but when you add “sweet” to it, in the south, it refers to heaven –that beautiful place somewhere “out there” yonder, where you hope to go one day, when this troublous life on earth is through. I suppose that’s where we get too the phrase, “he passed on.” For Christians, we don’t expire like moldy bread. But we “pass on” into another life –we transition into the sweet life with Jesus, in the “dwelling place” He has prepared for us.

Now before we get all morbid: No this is not a funeral, and this sermon is not about death. At least not right now for any of us. But the phrase “in the sweet by and by” is a lot like a phrase we encounter heavily throughout the Hebrew scriptures, and also in Jesus’ teaching to His disciples. In fact, it’s a phrase used by John, the gospel writer and disciple of Jesus, to describe a time when something strange and extraordinary happened just after Jesus called His first disciples. The phrase is “on the Third Day,” and the event is a wedding –a wedding feast at a town called Cana in Galilee.

Far from a simple consent to help out his mother in supplying wine for a party, no, there’s something much stranger and deeper going on in this story. Let’s take a look. But first…. a little more about that phrase, “on the Third Day” –a phrase that’s more metaphor than calendar date, and more pungent than the wine!

In fact, it might be easier to show you than to tell you.

[For this…..use visuals on screen to animate the story of Creation.]

Let’s take a look at Genesis 1: [you can either put visuals on screen and have people listen or read together from their Bibles….or you can put the words on screen over the visuals]

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Let’s pause for a moment.

What does creation look like BEFORE the end of the third day? [Give people time to answer….]

It’s the earth, the promise to bear vegetation and seed-bearing plants…. those that can reproduce ….. land that will bear fruit. Okay.

But what happens AFTER the third day? [Let people answer.]

That’s right. Light! Lights in the sky to give light on the earth –without which the vegetation can’t live! Light is the signal for Life! And what else begins with the separation of light and darkness?

Time. Time as we know it. The earth as we know it. History. Our Story and God’s Story in relationship. After the Third Day. Life.

But wait a minute. Let’s pause a moment and look at another Genesis account –the account in Genesis 2 (the oldest of the two stories). Let’s read that one:

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

What happened? There are two parts here too!

First ….no vegetation….no plants ….. because there is yet no water. Just dirt. Then streams came up from the earth….and watered the ground…..and God formed adam….humankind….into a shape from the clay…. Still no life. Until God breathes….into Adam’s nostrils the breath of life. Then “adam” (clay) becomes Adam, a living being.

On the Third Day.

Third Day is a metaphor for life. Not just any life. God-given life, Spirit-breathed life. Miraculous, garden-style, creation-from-nothingness life! The miracle of Life itself. Life from death….from nothingness…..from the deep, the void, the dry ground, the essence of creation itself….of seed, and being, future and time, livingness, and a new kind of relationship between humankind and God their Creator.

Life --the Miracle.

What else in scriptures happens BEFORE and AFTER the THIRD DAY?

--On the third day, Abraham sees Mt. Moriah….and is given a future as a people.

--On the third day, Pharaoh releases his cupbearer from death in prison, and he lives.

--On the third day, Joseph releases his brothers from prison, and they go on to populate Egypt.

--On the third day, the plague of darkness covers Egypt, but miraculously, the Israelites have light in their dwellings.

--After people have traveled in the wilderness, God descends to Mt. Sinai in fire to present Moses and the people with commandments etched in stone…on the third day.

--Israel is told to purify themselves with holy water from the mikveh after contact with the dead, so as to wash away their mourning ….on the third day.

--On the third day, Israel crosses the Jordan into the promised land.

--On the third day, Hezekiah is healed of his fatal disease and gives thanks in the Temple of God.

--On the third day, Jonah is expelled from the belly of the fish where he lingered somewhere between death and life.

--On the third day, Esther thwarted a death plot that would have exterminated the Jewish people, and became their salvation.

--On the third day, a long famine ends in David’s reign.

--On the third day, a famine ends as prophesied by Elijah.

--Says a Dead Sea Scroll document called “Gabriel’s Revelation,” “a messiah will be raised from the dead on the third day.”

--On the third day…..Jesus from Galilee turns purified water from a mikveh into gourmet wine.

On the Third Day.

For Jesus came….as God came…..to turn mourning into dancing, death to life, darkness to light, to release the captives, give sight to the blind, heal the ill, deliver us from darkness, restore us, revive us, save us. From ourselves.

And reunite us …with God…. In the “sweet by and by.”

“And in that day, the mountains will drip with sweet wine” (Joel 3:18).

“This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah: “This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. (Isaiah 37:30-32)”

[Option: Read the entirety of Jeremiah 31…..”The day is coming when I will make a new covenant with my people….I will write my covenant in their hearts….I will be their God…and they will be my people.”]

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord…. (Amos 9:13)

“After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight." (Hosea 6:2)

The wedding feast at Cana is not just any wedding, not just any feast. But it’s a metaphor the size of a rainbow pointing at Jesus, saying “THIS is the Messiah!” “THIS is my beloved SON!” “He will raise you up on the THIRD DAY!” And you will be with me in the Promised Land ---that place of beauty, love, and comfort –in the sweet by and by.

Where all are healed of their illnesses and depression.

Where all are freed from their doubts and debits.

Where all eyes are opened to the glory and the love of God.

Where all ears can hear the angelic host, singing GLORY in the highest heavens, for the Creator God!

Where those who were last will be first.

Where Jesus is preparing a place for you….a place for all of us….who recognize him….on that Third Day.

For He is the Bridegroom, come to celebrate with us in God’s heavenly feast. He is the Master of the Vineyard, and the Creator of the Rains, and the Winds. He is the Restorer of Hope and the Giver of Life.

HE is your God. And He has come …for you today with the power to turn water into the sweet wine of salvation.

For today is the Day. Those who follow Jesus, those who trust in Him, recognize Him, believe in Him, commit heart and hearth to Him, will dance with Him, drink with Him, feast with Him at God’s holy table.

This is the meaning of the resurrection. This is what Jesus’ mission was all about.

Listen all of you. “This is the day that the Lord has made…. “This is the Third Day.

[Optional ending….have someone sing again ….”In the Sweet By and By”….and invite others to join in.]

In the Sweet By and By

There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;

For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain

In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

Refrain

To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.

Refrain

Image Exegesis: Taste and See

In order to understand Jesus’ ministry and mission….his meaning and identity, you have to understand the meaning of the Third Day, Water and Light, New Wine, and the Promise of the Vineyard, made by the Lord of the Vineyard. For Jesus’ first miracle, turning purified water into wine at the Wedding Feast of Cana, is filled to the brim and overflowing with metaphors, metaphors, metaphors. This miracle is the first of Jesus’ ministry. And it defines His ministry.

And it happens on the Third Day.

In Genesis 1, Third Day Occurs in which vegetation is created. But just after that is when Light is created….Illuminaries…..from the heavens that shine on the earth in order to give life. In Genesis 2 also, God creates the earth….and creates “adam” from it…..but BEFORE any rains have fallen. All is just “dead earth.” And then comes ….Life. (On the Third Day).

And time begins.

Life as we know it on the earth. And our relationship with God begins too.

We are born….on our Third Day…in our Third Day relationship with God.

In fact, every time in scripture we see “third day” it is a transition from concealment, darkness, discernment, death, nothingness, lifelessness, famine, illness, captivity, seclusion to deliverance, new life, spouting and propagating life, new wine, revival, healing, and restoration –that is, resurrection! The Third day is a time of transition to a hopeful and beautiful future in which hunger is sated, thirst is quenched, and the soul is salved.*

Whether in the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) or the Prophets (especially Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, and Amos), the scriptures are filled with references to water, fruit, vineyards, mountains that drip with new wine, restoration of seed bearing crops and abundant crops that will reseed, and rejuvenate the land. The wedding feast at Cana in this sense is almost like a harvest celebration. In fact, it IS a harvest celebration –The Great Harvest of God –the reaper, the bringing in of the sheaves –in the sweet by and by!

This is what happens in the Third Day. And it gives new meaning to “taste and see” that the Lord is good. Taste the wine, the fruits, the blessings of the land. And know the Lord’s promise is real.

As real as the promise of abundant crops is the promise of eternal Life, made by God the Creator Himself! For He is the holy Bridegroom, and we are the bride, about to be “wined and dined” and united with God in a kind of rebirth.

And before the bride enters the wedding, she will purify herself in the mikveh, in holy purified water, the same water Jesus uses to create His “new wine.” The wine that “drips from the mountains” is this same kind of “new wine” that Jesus creates from the bridal source.

Jesus first miracle of ministry is none other than a pointer to His identity –as Messiah and Lord, Son of God, Salvation of the People, here to usher in the Third Day glory.**

Paul refers to Jesus buried and raised on the “third day” in 1 Corinthians 15, and he notes that it is “written.” Similar are Jesus’ references (Luke 24:46, Matthew 12:40, 16:21, and 17:23). Where was it written? We have hints in the Torah and prophets about Third Day. But likely there were other sources that we no longer have access to as well that Jesus and his followers draw upon. One of those may be a manuscript we now call “Gabriel’s Revelation.” Found in the vicinity of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Hebrew tablet indicates that the “messiah will be raised from the dead on the third day.” Some rabbis and other scholars believe that this was one of several references to this messianic belief in early Jewish history, and a concept that distinctly predates Jesus.

The references to Jesus as the Light and the Life ---the Way, Truth, and Life—all point to his identity as God’s messiah of the Third Day, the holy bridegroom, the original Creator with the power to give new life and restoration, to pour out “new wine” upon the people of Israel –ALL of God’s people.

The wedding feast at Cana has many similarities to the Creation Story found already in Genesis 1 in respect to the Third Day –indeed with many of the scriptural stories –AND with Jesus’ proclaimed mission to give sight to the blind, to release the captives, free the oppressed, heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim the year of God’s favor!^

For Jesus is equated with Israel –God’s Son. And as God’s Son….is resurrected on the Third Day.

The hints are there…if only we understand the metaphors!

The wedding feast is THE celebration –the proclamation and the foreshadowing of Jesus entire mission and ministry. Without beginning here…..the depth of the gospels is lost.
