When I was a college student I was tempted by only one other profession than the preaching ministry. That was the practice of law. And I am convinced that God is just as delighted with a Christian lawyer as He is with a Christian pastor. Those poor attorneys! Everybody tells lawyer jokes, including lawyers themselves. And I admire them for that. The only two groups in our society who have the grace and self-confidence to tell funny stories about themselves are attorneys and rednecks. May God bless both ...
... accidentally shifted it into reverse. No one had hit him; he had backed into the car behind him. (1) It's so easy to pass judgement without all the facts, isn't it? The other guy is the stupid driver. Jesus could have just as well been talking to us when ... Spirit work in us. The Honora The man's mother, a poor widow, wrote a letter to Judge Lowrey, asking him to overturn the judgement and forget the fine. She explained that her son was broke and unemployed; it would fall on her shoulders to pay his fine. The ...
... in the service of his country. (5) We could save ourselves a lot of embarrassment if knew all the facts before we criticized someone else. That is the first question. Do you know all the facts? Here is the second: HAVE YOU EARNED THE RIGHT TO PASS JUDGEMENT? That is, when you are tempted to belittle someone else's efforts in the church, first ask, am I doing everything I should be doing to serve Christ myself? If you can answer in the affirmative, maybe ” just maybe, you are on more solid ground. Comedian ...
... He had no idea that what he did even mattered to the father of the groom. So when he was confronted, he was totally speechless. This was a theme of some of Jesus' other parables, you'll remember. There will be those who will come to the last judgement and say, "Lord, Lord," and Jesus will say, "I never knew you." Can you imagine their surprise? Such people remind me of a prayer one little boy offered during family devotions one night: "Dear Jesus, sorry for the mess we made in the yard today." Then he added ...
... desperate poverty and another to affluence? This is an immense and troubling problem. Everyone who has seen Michael Jordan play basketball or Emmitt Smith run with a football knows we are not all created equal. However, this parable reminds us that on Judgement Day we will not have the luxury of passing judgement on God, but that God will be judging us. God will gently remind us that we are not here on earth to discuss what kind of God He is but what kind of servants we are. God has already demonstrated on ...
... the years, the boulder hovering ominously above Richard Slyhoff’s grave has shifted. Part of that movement is due to erosion, part is due to a tornado that actually moved it out of place. The boulder no longer hangs over Richard Slyhoff’s grave. When the day of judgement does come for him, as it will for all of us, he will be surprised to discover he no longer has a rock to hide under. (1) Even if our theology does not exactly match up with Richard Slyhoff’s, most of us would probably like to avoid ...
... , of course, is that God is not a puppeteer and we are not puppets. God has given us minds to use or not use, and I told the man that we would probably find out that the fire began because someone was smoking in bed and not using wise judgement or for some other like reason. The fire department now feels that the fire was due to arson, and arson is related to human sin and folly, not to God. Or take the building that collapsed in West Virginia many years ago killing so many workmen. Some undoubtedly called ...
... as the sins of his younger sibling. He couldn't look into his brother's heart. He had no idea what caused his brother to leave home like he did, and he has no idea of the sincerity of his brother's repentance. He is in no place to pass judgement. And you and I know there are many elder brothers in this world. Remember Ann Richard's classic description of George Bush? "He was born on third base and thought he hit a triple." It may have been a bit unfair to describe President Bush like that, but it is ...
... is the first reason that Jesus makes no effort to stop her. Only he can see her heart. But there may be another reason. ONLY JESUS COULD SEE GOD'S HEART. There are many Christians who still have an Old Testament view of God. God is a God of judgement, of vengeance, of wrath. As far as these Christians are concerned, Jesus need not ever have come. For they will not listen to him, they will not heed his example of love and grace and acceptance. Maxie Dunnam tells a powerful story that comes from a novel by ...
... came home to roost. Religious men fell on their knees and begged a final blessing before the end came. In Hartford, Connecticut the State Legislature was in session and someone moved adjournment thinking that the Day of Judgement had come. But then a legislator stood up and said, "I am against adjournment. The Day of Judgement either is approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore candles to be brought." The ...
... not that easy. Where do we turn for help? FIRST OF ALL, WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE THAT LIFE IS MADE OF CHOICES. People are not born bad or good. Some people ARE born in very bad circumstances and they become scarred for life. This is why we dare not pass judgement on another human being. We don't know how our lives would have turned out if we had experienced what they experienced. Still, none of us ever lose the ability to choose. It's easy for us to forget, when faced with a tense situation, that we can choose ...
... in. But Jesus will be walking along beside us. And at each gate, the angels will take one look at Jesus and announce, "You're with Him, go on in." (2) Evangelist Tony Campolo says that in his teenage years he was terrified by a visiting pastor's depiction of Judgement Day. This pastor claimed that one day God would show us a movie of every single sinful thought, word, or action we ever committed. And he ended his lurid description with the announcement, "And your mother will be there!" But Tony claims that ...
... did it anyway. Through the music, they could confront their captors and affirm that one day God would judge their evil. (2) If John the Baptist sounds a little harsh to us, it is because he lived in a harsh and cruel world, and he pronounced God's judgement on that world. That's what a prophet does. A prophet pronounces God's righteousness and judges society in light of that righteousness. John was definitely a prophet. I wonder what he would say if he were preaching today. What are our sins? I'll let you ...
... says to us that there is such a thing as an unproductive life. In Jesus analogy, the farmer (God) is depicted as pruning out bad branches. We don't like to wrestle with that concept, because it implies that God cuts some people out. There is an element of judgement in it that we would just as soon not deal with. There are those who are quick to point out that Jesus was here specifically referring to the Jews. That is true. But we miss the point if we do not understand that this law of nature also applies ...

... Will you spend your life criticizing others? Are you prepared to have God to the same to you? is the question posed. If you swing a pendulum out, it will fly back at you again in full force and cut you down as well. We damage ourselves more in our judgements of others than those who we are judging. Jesus reminds us, it is God’s place to judge, not ours. And God’s judgments are more than not, always full of mercy –far more than we would ever be willing to grant. For human beings, to “know” is all ...
... little, three lettered word that sticks in our craw, "SIN." I. SLAPPED THE SKUNK: We don't like that word. It's ugly and it pushes all the wrong buttons. It makes us feel guilty and we don't like to feel guilty. It smacks of judgement, and we don't want anyone sitting in judgement of us. It points out our imperfections, faults and frailties; and we don't want to know about our imperfections, faults and frailties. We don't want to admit that we can be wrong or make mistakes. We don't like the word but the ...
... He is still the Way! Use these troubled times to find faith and you will find freedom and victory, no matter what manner of madness the world may bring. This freedom and victory is beautifully described by Isaiah, a prophet who also had a lot to say about judgement and doom. "Fear not," says God through Isaiah, "For I have redeemed you. I have named you and you are mine. When you pass through the waters I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you pass through the fire ...
... star! Maybe it surprises us that Jesus didin’t make more of this issue than he did. He just brought it up, as if to say, "You know, if I really wanted to get nasty with you..." Then he lets it drop. He doesn’t speculate, he doesn’t offer judgement. He just says, "Yes, I know you don’t have a husband. I know everything there is to know about you." And the woman responds, "What are you – some kind of prophet or something?" And then Jesus and the woman have a mini debate about real worship and false ...
... and evil. But it does imply a serious reproof of the attitude which objects even to the mere mention of the possibility of universal salvation out of a vengeful desire to see sinners punished. To describe Christian evangelism as Channeling Grace is to be aware of the ultimate paradox of judgement and grace. It is, simply, in the most profound sense, to value the positive over the negative, people over accomplishments, love over logic!
... to take up your cross and come after me, you cannot be my disciple because you are not going where I am going." He did it not for himself but for us that we might be healthy and whole. Second, Jesus made very clear in the Parable of the Final Judgement that if we want to have the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven as we pray, it is going to cost us something also. If we are to get rid of the root causes of injustice, prejudice, racism, hunger, ignorance, crime, disease and many of the ...
... in a different standard. To live by a higher ethic that does not permit anger nor insult is the prelude to settling our differences. The conventional law said, "Thou shall not kill." That's all that was required. But, Jesus taught that everyone who is angry is liable for judgement. It's not enough not to kill. To be angry with someone else makes us liable for the judgment of God. Matthew wants us to learn a fundamental and basic lesson. Matthew wants us to learn that if we are hung up with each other we are ...
... nothing to serve or obey him. Our church membership may be a false security for some of us. We think that church membership is an automatic ticket to heaven. Our prayers and our praises may be lulling us into a spiritual sleep, the sleep of death. When judgement comes, we may be surprised by being excluded from heaven. Jesus said, "Inasmuch as you have not done it to one of the least of these my brethren you have not done it to me ... Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil ...
... don’t grab at things, who look in the mirror and ponder life, have their doubts. For instance, why, if God is good, should a tornado strike my city of Louisville in 1975? A group of preachers said in public statement that it was God’s judgement on our sins. Unhappily for those preachers the storm missed the saloons and the brothels, and hit the Baptist Seminary. A jovial cynic might exclaim, "What’s wrong with that?" Well, I hope he’s wrong, because I teach there! More seriously, what of the poor ...
... some 1,900 years ago to his friends: "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgement ... For though the word of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; unto us who would be saved, it is the rower of God" (1 Corinthians 1:10, 18).
... . Not O.J. Simpson, nor President Clinton, nor Saddam Hussein, nor you or me. Some judgment is immediate; some is delayed; and the rest will be waiting on us at the door to eternity. THE SECOND TRUTH WE FIND HERE IS THIS: IN THE FINAL JUDGEMENT, GOD WILL BE FAIR. Verses 13 through 15 of this second chapter are really one parenthetical statement by Paul about how God will judge. Though God will not play favorites, his judgment will be very discriminating. God will take into account one's limitations and ...
