When I lived in Hyde Park, in the south section of Chicago, I would be hit up by homeless people at least three times every day walking to seminary class or the university’s library. Over time, I came to know the guy at 57th and Kenwood and the other guy by Eduardo’s pizza by name. However, their names are gone from memory nearly thirty years later. When I passed them, I often gave them coins or some dollar bills. Other times I didn’t.

Friends would say, “Don’t give money. They’re only going to drink it.”

That may have been true, but I like myself better as a person who sometimes shows compassion in the face of not enough facts.

Our Good Friday reading tells us that the Word of God ― the Bible ― is (Hebrews 4:12):
