What excites you the most? I don't mean just any one thing, but what are the things that come to your mind that really get you excited? I thought about this and this is just a short list for me, but it will give you some idea of the things that really get me excited.

  • Knowing that I am going to heaven
  • Knowing that God loves me unconditionally
  • A romantic get away with Teresa
  • Spending time with my sons (James, Jonathan and Joshua)
  • Breaking ninety on the golf course
  • Hot homemade chocolate chip cookies
  • Anytime Georgia wins
  • Anytime Florida, Auburn, or Tennessee loses

Think about this question - what excites God? There is a story of an incident that took place in the life of Jesus in Mark 2 that gives me some clues on when God gets excited. It is an interesting story that believe it or not revolves around an invalid, in essence a paraplegic.

"And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men." (Mark 2: 1-3, NKJV) Now this man is called a paralytic, because the Greek word in essence gives us that English word. It literally means to be, "loosed on one side." Whether because of a fall or because this man was born this way, this man was crippled.

His arms hung on his side like Christmas ornaments on a tree. His legs were as limp as spaghetti. Now if he was going to get in to the presence of Jesus, somebody was going to have to bring him.

There was a greater problem, because even if he could have gotten up, he couldn't have gotten in. The house was full. People jammed the doorways. Kids were sitting in the windows. Nobody could move. It was standing room only and this man could not stand. This is where the story really begins and when God really gets excited, because God gets excited...

I. When He Sees Our Faith

This man had four buddies who evidently had heard that Jesus was in town. They were determined to get their friend to Jesus. We read in verse 4, "They couldn't get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus." (Mark 2:4, NLT)

You've got to admire these guys. Even though they couldn't go in, they didn't give up. The reason why they didn't give up was - they had faith. They climbed up to the top of this house where the roof was. In Bible days, the roof was made up of dried palm branches with dirt that was laid across beams, somewhat like tile. It was relatively easy to tear the roof off and that is exactly what they did. The owner of that house now had a sun roof. Think about the faith it took to do this.

They could have fallen and hurt themselves. They could have dropped their friend to the floor. Furthermore, what they did certainly wasn't kosher. I mean after all de-roofing someone's house could be construed as anti-social. Furthermore, they were going to interrupt Jesus right in the middle of His sermon, but none of these things mattered to those men. They saw their chance and by faith they took it believing that Jesus would take care of their friend.

I will be honest with you. I love these guys. They get on top of a man's roof, cut a hole in it, let their buddy down through the roof while a church service was going on, they were facing a possible arrest and for sure a law suit, but they were determined to get this man to Jesus.

Notice how Jesus responded. "Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, ‘My son, your sins are forgiven.'" (Mark 2:5, NLT) The owner of the house was ticked off. As you are going to see, the religious hypocrites in the crowd weren't very happy, but Jesus was excited, because He saw real faith.

The reason why Jesus was so excited was He knew there was only one reason that would have motivated them to go to all that trouble to get that man to him and it was this: They believed Jesus could and would heal their friend. If you are a believer today, I want to encourage you to begin to believe this - God can use you to bring other people to Jesus.

By the way, did you notice it was a team approach? It took four men to bring him to Jesus. So often that is how it is. Most people are not brought to Jesus simply by one person, it is usually a team. There is a man in this church, who has a special bond to me. He is here every Sunday. When I met this man, he was about as far away from God as a man could get. He had lost his job and was on the verge of losing his family. His sister had been praying for him as well as his wife, that God would break through and break into his heart.

This man like me, happens to be a rabid Georgia Bulldog fan. He had great confidence in Coach Mark Richt as a man as well as a coach. He thought if he could just talk to Coach Mark Richt, maybe Coach Richt could help him. He called Coach Richt's office and to show you the kind of man Coach Richt is, he took the call not even knowing who this man was or what he wanted. Coach Richt took 45 minutes to talk to this man about Jesus.

When Coach Richt found out where this man lived, he called me and told me about him, gave me his number, and asked me if I would see him. I called him that very day, we met for lunch the next day at a Zaxby's restaurant of all places. Sitting in that restaurant, I was able to bring that man to faith in Jesus Christ. His heart was changed. His life was transformed and he is back with his family and serving Jesus. God gets excited when people believe they can be used to bring other people to Jesus.

II. When He Shares His Forgiveness

Now the shock really sets in. Jesus looks at this man and simply says, "My son, your sins are forgiven." (Mark 2:5, NLT) Now at least five people are royally ticked off. Think about those four friends up on the roof. They are hot, dirty, sweaty, probably facing a law suit, with a crowd that thinks they are a brunch of nuts and they go to all of this trouble to bring this man to a healer and instead they get a preacher.

How about the paraplegic? He is laying there thinking, "Great, I can't walk and you want to preach a sermon. I am here to deal with my sickness and you are dealing with sin. What is wrong with this picture?"

As you are going to see, there was nothing wrong with this picture because this man was about to learn his greatest problem was not his sickness, but his greatest problem was his sin. Sin either directly or indirectly caused his sickness. Sickness was a symptom. Sin was the problem. I will explain that further in just a moment.

This man's sickness was his most pressing problem, but this man's sin was his primary problem. He thought, "The greatest thing Jesus can do is heal me." Jesus knew, "The greatest thing I can do is save him." The greatest need this man had was not the healing of his sickness; it was the healing of his soul. Let me tell you why.

Every problem we have is simply a symptom of the number one problem we all have which is sin. If you want to know why cancer cells show up in the body, babies die, drunk drivers kill innocent people, there is pain in child-birth or why bad things happens to good people, you have got to go all the way back to the first three chapters of Genesis.

Our problem is we have separated sin from the problems caused by sin. When life goes bad, when things don't work out, when the breaks don't go our way, let's be honest. Who do we blame? We blame God, but it never occurs to us to blame sin.

Let me put it to you this way. Sorrow, suffering and death are all caused by sin. I want to share with you one verse of scripture and if you really hear what it says, a light is going to come on in your heart about a lot of things. Romans 5:12 says, "This is what happened: Sin came into the world by one man, Adam. Sin brought death with it. Death spread to all men because all have sinned." (Romans 5:12, NLV)

Simply put, the root cause of every problem we have whether it is pollution or perversion is sin. Sin is what has messed everything up. Sin is the reason babies die and people murder other people and nations war against other nations and non-smokers get lung cancer and marriages break up and children rebel against their parents. It all goes back to sin.

Why is that so important? For this simple reason. If sin is our greatest problem, then forgiveness is our greatest need. This man was crippled, but he was primarily crippled by sin. Jesus loved him too much to deal with his symptom. He wanted to deal with his problem. He gave him the greatest gift that he could ever give to anyone. He gave him complete and total forgiveness. Whenever someone understands how serious sin is and how sweet forgiveness is and comes to God and receives that forgiveness, God really gets excited. Because of that, we see one other thing that excites God.

III. When He Shows His Faithfulness

"Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, ‘Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins, but God alone?' Immediately, Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts and he said to them, ‘Why are you thinking these things?'"(Mark 2: 6-8, NIV)

Now before I go on there is a neat little lesson to take home with you today just from these verses. Never ever think to yourself around Jesus, because with Jesus you are never thinking to yourself. You talk about intimidation, Jesus is the master mind reader. The next time you think you are thinking to yourself - you have an ease dropper. In fact, Jesus not only knows what you are thinking, Jesus knows what you are going to think before you even think it. Now that is intimidation.

They thought to themselves, "You can't just give a man forgiveness. He has got to earn it. He has to bring a sacrifice. He has got to pay a price for his sin and besides that only God can forgive sins." So, they throw down the gantlet and Jesus takes it up.

"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise, take up your bed and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins - He said to the paralytic, ‘I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.'" (Mark 2: 9-11, NKJV) Notice what Jesus does, He uses the physical to get to the spiritual. Jesus healed the man's legs to prove He could save the man's soul. Jesus made it a put up or shut up time and for these religious hypocrites He put up and they had to shut up.

He really did ask "the" question and I want you to answer it. Which is easier for Jesus? To forgive a soul or to heal a body? Let me put it to you this way, to heal that man's body it took one breath, seven words and 2 1/2 seconds, but to forgive that man's sin, it took the blood of Jesus and the life of Jesus. One took a sentence, the other took his body. One took a moment, the other took his life.

I want to say it again. Every problem, every struggle, every illness, every heartache, every pain you have is a physical reminder that your greatest need is spiritual. You see most of this world doesn't get that and neither did this crowd.

"And the man did it - got up, grabbed his stretcher, and walked out, with everyone there watching him. They rubbed their eyes, incredulous - and then praised God, saying, ‘We've never seen anything like this!'" (Mark 2:12, MSG) They were so excited about the physical, but Jesus was excited about the spiritual. They were so excited about the temporary, Jesus was so excited about the eternal. They were so excited this man could now walk. Jesus was so excited because this man could now worship.

That is why I am a Christian. Christianity is the only spiritual philosophy that addresses our greatest problem which is sin and meets our greatest need which is forgiveness. If my sins have been forgiven, my place is secure in heaven and I no longer have to fear death, then I can face anything else. When I can stand before a holy and righteous God and say because of the blood of Jesus Christ, my sins are forgiven, God really gets excited.
