When a retired accountant named Carl decided to take his “dream trip” to Africa to go on a Safari, he had no idea what was coming. He had seen photos on Facebook and other social media of the magnificent scenery, the rushing rivers, the hauntingly beautiful jungle with all of its sounds and vines, the rich savannah, and the majestic animals that roamed those regions: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, hippos, giraffes. He was beyond excited. And although the tour guide issued a brochure to all of the participants, listing the warnings, guidelines, and cautions to follow, he brushed them aside. He knew others who had taken the trips. And the safari guides were experienced. It was their job to protect the tourists. He could imagine it now. The smells, the scenery. The rides in the open-air jungle jeeps, the photos of wildlife, the rough terrain. This would be the adventure of a lifetime.

That was the understatement. For along the way, just as the guide had stopped the vehicle in the grasslands to point to a pride of lions making their way across the way, one of them stopped, stared, leaned back, and began to charge toward the group. The guide, quick as lightening, jumped into the vehicle and sped away but not before Carl could practically feel the breath of the animal behind his back, claws raised to strike.

While safari attacks are not the norm, about 1 tourist per year dies as a result of wild animals encountered on safari. The trip holds significant risks.

In one case, a Florida woman celebrating her 37th birthday in Zimbabwe was dragged from her canoe into the water by an aggressive hippopotamus. In another case, a leopard in South Africa attacked a field guide, leaping unexpectedly onto the open-top jeep. That man survived. In Tanzania, another man was less lucky when an elephant attacked without warning. He survived but had to undergo 12 surgeries for his injuries. In Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, a 3-year-old toddler was snatched by a Leopard. He did not survive. Another woman, in a nature preserve in South Africa was gored by a Rhino with serious injuries.[1] These are just some of the dangerous encounters with animals on “routine” daily Safari trips, which are safe –most of the time.

So, the question when you receive an invitation to go on an exciting and adventurous Safari must always be asked: “Do you know what you’re signing up for?” “Are you prepared to take the risks?”

Now here’s the kicker. In 2023 alone, African Safari Tourism netted 16.9 billion dollars! In fact, Safari travel increased in the last year 111%![2]

Even knowing the risks, our spirit of adventure is irresistible –and contagious! Do we often go with a false sense of security that we will come out unharmed? Undoubtedly! Do we feel the risks will most likely tip in our favor? Of course! Do we fully comprehend the severity of the risks we are taking? Not really!

Like a young person learning to drive for the first time, we as human beings, especially when we are young, generally feel invincible. We hear the risks. We know they exist. But we seldom believe they will apply to us.

Only when someone stops us and makes us listen, will we tip our heads in wonder, stop our adrenaline-racing brains, and perhaps err on the side of caution. Even then –most will end up still taking the risk. Because the adventure is too great to miss!

We see this part-naive, part-adventurous spirit in Jesus’ disciples James and John in our scripture for today. The sons of Zebedee the successful and entrepreneurial fishing mogul of Capernaum’s docks, James and John are up for the adventure. They’ve been along for the discipleship ride. They love when Jesus pushes the envelope, and they believe, he will soon be in power! (I said they were successful not savvy!)

They want an upfront seat at the steering wheel for Jesus’ Grand Jerusalem Adventure! Status. Power. Adventure. Glory. They are strapping on their boots for the ride of their lives!

“Appoint us next to you,” they say, as they pull Jesus aside, “I’ll take the right, and he can take the left.” “Yeah, let’s do this!”

Jesus’ reply?

“You don’t know what you’re asking!” “Are you really prepared to drink the cup I drink?” “To be baptized with my baptism?” In other words, are you sure you understand what’s going on here? Are you certain you want to take that level of risk?

And then: “I can’t appoint you to sit next to me. That’s not for me to decide.” “But if you really want to take this on, I’ll let you take it on!”

“Yes!” they reply with fervor and zeal! Not for a second understanding what that cup and baptism really mean!

It’s going to take a good deal of time still for Jesus to help his disciples to understand that his goal –at least his goal in the life he’s living right now –is not to sit on the throne of Jerusalem. But to walk to his death for the sake of God’s mission! A mission of love, service, humility, and sacrifice, in which they will likely encounter torture, maiming, persecution, and death!

In fact, a disciple post-resurrection would be in far more danger than going on an African Safari among lions, and leopards, and cheetahs! Oh my!

For Jesus’ cup is a cup of sacrifice. And his baptism is one of fire.

The reward will be great. But the journey will be treacherous.

We often like to think of discipleship as attending Bible Studies, engaging in community missions, taking part in worship, or working together in love. And while it can be all of that, it can be so much more!

In some countries around the world, Christians are still being persecuted and even put to death for proclaiming their faith in Jesus. In some countries around the world the church exists “underground” for fear of persecution.

And yet the church of Christ is growing. The World Christian Church is growing larger each and every day, as people take on that risk for the sake of the Gospel –a gospel so powerful and important, with such impetus to change the world that people will do anything to proclaim God’s will! Even in the face of death!

Today, in our western, protestant churches, mortal “danger” may not seem imminent, and Jesus’ invitation to discipleship may not seem so very ominous. But Christianity is under fire. And it’s getting “wild” out there!

So, Jesus is calling you –every one of you –to step forward for a new and different kind of journey, a discipleship that is more daring, more adventurous, more courageous, and more dangerous than you ever have imagined.

Go into the wilds of our culture! Go into mission fields ridden with all kinds of cultural problems? Go into communities driven by greed, power, and money? Go into regions fraught with political discord, division, and derangement?

No, discipleship today is not an easy-peasy assignment. In fact, it never was! It takes moxy. It takes consideration. It takes a sense of passion and adventure as you’ve never known before!

But oh the sights that you will see! Oh the experiences you will have!

Oh the love that you will spread.

Oh the lives that you will save!

Are you ready to drink his cup and undergo his baptism?

He’s waiting for your answer.
