Late Saturday, twenty-somethings are working out. I draw inspiration from them and kick discouragement to the curb.

Halfway through the workout, I sit at my least favorite machine: the leg press.

Getting into the machine always makes me feel like a goofy walrus.

Get into the machine. Adjust the seat. Legs up. Turn the lever to lock in my weight. I am feeling good to have moved into a new weight class. Let’s do ten presses.

Press. No movement unless you count the muscle spasms in my back as absolutely nothing moves.

Sitting up, I see some joker has added a second lever to the bottom plate ― 490 pounds.

Sometimes we do everything right, and nothing.

We press, we strain, nothing.

Does Easter have good news for us?
