NOTE: Historically, the menorah was a candlestick having seven branches and was used in the ancient temple at Jerusalem. As used during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, the menorah is a candlestick with eight branches. Many menorahs have a ninth branch or an extra candle, representing the "shames." This is used to light the others.
