Sometimes Christians do not live out what the Master taught them. Some tragic occurrences have happened in history in the name of Christ. This morning's message is not a defense of the Christian religion.

I remember a sequence on All in the Family several years ago in which Archie Bunker is arguing with "the Meathead", his son-in-law, a professed agnostic. The son-in-law asks, "Archie, if there is a God, why is there so much suffering in the world?" There is a long, awkward silence. Finally Archie yells, "Edith, would you get in here and help me? I'm having to defend God all by myself." God does not need our defense. Sometimes the church does, however. Sometimes we forget what it is that God really requires of us. We are human beings.
