1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

We have been studying the 23rd Psalm together and there have really been only two characters in the Psalm—the shepherd and the sheep. But now a third party has been added—enemies. Do you ever feel surrounded by enemies? Do you ever feel like you are all alone; that all the world is against you and you can’t count on anybody? Do you ever feel just totally alone and that nobody cares anything about you?

You may have heard the old story about Tonto and the Lone Ranger who were riding out in the desert, and they came over a hill and all of a sudden they were surrounded by 2,000 Indians. The Lone Ranger looked at Tonto and said, “What are we going to do, Tonto?” To which Tonto replied, “What do you mean, we, Pale Face?”
