Mark 9:33-37 · Who Is the Greatest?

33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?" 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."

The politician was sitting at his campaign headquarters when the phone rang. He listened intently, and after a moment his face brightened.

When he hung up, he immediately phoned his mother to tell her the good news.

“Mom,” he shouted, “the results are in. I won the election!”

“Honestly?” she asked.

The politician’s smiled faded. “Aw, Mom, why bring that up at a time like this?”

We all like to win, don’t we? We all want to be part of the crowd chanting, “We’re number one! We’re number one.”

“Winning isn’t everything,” said legendary coach Vince Lombardi, “it’s the only thing.” Lombardi complained he was misquoted, but there are people who believe that winning is the only thing that matters.
