[The SOLDIER guards the grave of JESUS. There is a clap of thunder. The SOLDIER looks toward the grave in amazement, then runs out. After some moments, MARY, MARTHA, and MARY MAGDALENE enter.]
MARY: When he stood with us at the church that day so full of life ...
MARTHA: I know. None of us thought that now ... so soon ...
MARY MAGDALENE: Look! The grave is open!
[They run forward]
MARTHA: [Looking into the grave] It’s empty!
MARY: The body’s gone!
MARY MAGDALENE: They’ve taken him away!
MARTHA: But the Governor said ...
MARY: What could have happened?
MARTHA: We’ve got to tell Peter and John. [MARTHA and MARY exit.]
MARY MAGDALENE: [At the graveside] I knew I wouldn’t hear your voice again, Lord, but I wanted to thank…
