A popular series of movies has been the Lethal Weapon series. You might remember that in the series Mel Gibson plays a semi-unbalanced police officer named Riggs. Riggs is a capable detective but occasionally he goes berserk and mentally flips out. He's called a lethal weapon because you never know when he's going to go off. Each of us has the potential to become a "lethal weapon." We possess within ourselves a weapon against which there is little insurance others can take out. This weapon enables us to ...
The text for the message this morning, along with the scripture lesson that has already been read is from the Book of Romans, the 12th chapter. Its one of those signal passages in the New Testament that many of you know by heart. The first two verses of the 12th chapter. This is the word of the Lord. I appeal to you therefore brothers and sisters by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, wholly acceptable unto God, who is your spiritual worship. And be not conformed to the ...
There are a lot of images in the Psalms -- powerful, descriptive, suggestive images. Listen. "My God is a strong rock.""In the shadow of his rock I will rest.""In the shelter of his wings I will take refuge." The images abound. God is seen as a safe harbor -- a shepherd's arms -- our life is one in which we pass through the valley of the shadow of death -- and we walk by still waters and rest in green pastures. The images are on every page. But there's one image in our Psalm today that I'm sure will at ...
Before performing a baptism, the priest approached the young father and said solemnly, “Baptism is a serious step. Are you prepared for it?” “I think so,” the man replied. “My wife has made appetizers and we have a caterer coming to provide plenty of cookies and cakes for all of our guests.” “I don’t mean that,” the priest responded. “I mean, are you prepared spiritually?” “Oh, sure,” came the reply. “I’ve got a keg of beer and a case of whiskey." This is not exactly what the priest had in mind. Was this ...
There is a hilarious story about a man who is walking along a lonely beach when he suddenly hears a deep voice that says to him: DIG! He looks around: nobody’s there. “I am having hallucinations,” he thinks. Then he hears the voice again: I SAID, DIG! So he starts to dig in the sand with his bare hands, and after some inches, he finds a small chest with a rusty lock. The deep voice says: OPEN! OK, the man thinks, let’s open the thing. He finds a rock with which to destroy the lock, and when the chest is ...

All: Praise the Lord. Amen. Collect Eternal God, our Creator and Sustainer, on the day of Pentecost you sent your Holy Spirit upon your church, and promised that it would abide with us forever. People: You crowned them with glory and honor. All: O Lord, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world. Collect Almighty God, Creator of the universe, when we look at the sky, at the moon and stars which you set in their places, we stand in awe and marvel at your greatness. You have revealed yourself most personally ...
1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, 3 ‘Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.’ 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6 ‘I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.’ 7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, ‘You are my son; today I have ...
Jean and I have just gotten back from a three-week vacation trip up in Northern California. When I returned to the office I discovered that a lot of people thought that we were in Germany. That is because four weeks ago this weekend, there was a wonderful event here at this church celebrating my twenty years as one of the ministers on the staff. That evening it was announced that we would be given a trip to Germany. That was the first we had heard of it. It was a surprise. So we have yet to even start to ...
We live in a culture that is increasingly secular. At its best, secularism is simply what we Americans call the separation of church and state. It is a practical way to keep people from having to live lives regimented by someone else's religious convictions and that keeps countries from being torn by conflicts between religious groups that all want to write the rules. There is a lot of history in our world that argues for the practicality of that kind of arrangement. As it has taken shape among us, however ...
Call To Worship One: The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. All: May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace! (Psalm 29:10-11) Collect Lord, your voice from heaven calls us during this time of worship. Your Son is your beloved, and beloved of us also. Call To Worship One: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Two: Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Right Side: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Left Side: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. All: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. (based on Psalm 100) ...
Call To Worship Come to the body of Christ, to be strengthened by teaching, fellowship, bread, and prayer. Amen. Collect Great signs and wonders we seek, O Lord, and the greatest of these signs and wonders is this precious fellowship you have shared with us through the believers who have come here to worship you. Amen. Prayer Of Confession What do I clutch within my heart, unwilling to share with my sisters and brothers? What do I hoard within my home or my wallet which might do good within this fellowship ...
Call To Worship Approach, God's people, the one who is true judge with true justice. Approach the throne of mercy. Receive God's commendation and care. Collect Lord, we come fearing condemnation and are surprised in the Lesson of your word that you dispense commendation. Surely you see the world differently than us, you who are creator, you who are family, you who are friend. In the Lesson of your word may we learn more of your good will. Amen. Prayer Of Confession If we have set ourselves up in our place ...
Call To Worship Surely the Lord is in this place - and I did not know it! How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. (from Genesis 28:16-17) Collect You are found not in luxury, Lord, but on stone pillows as we run from our fears. We know that seen and unseen, angels are rising to and descending from your holy throne. We thank you that heaven is always in our midst for those with eyes that see. Amen. Prayer Of Confession Lord, your promises to our ...
Call To Worship One: God is mindful of his covenant forever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations ... All: ... the covenant that he made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. One: Even as we gather as a sinful people we celebrate God's faithfulness which never fails. All: Lord, descend to us as our portion and inheritance, as we worship you today. (based on Psalm 105:8-11) Collect Today we come together as God's people, sure of God's wisdom in charting our paths. After a time of long waiting ...
Call To Worship Leader: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. People: He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Leader: He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. People: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Leader: Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil ...
Call To Worship Let us resolve because of the love we have for each other to share not only the precious gospel of God but also our own selves, that we might through the revelation of God's good gift in us come to know God more perfectly in our worship today. Collect Sisters and brothers, let us gather together in God's name, sharing the gifts that are present among us. Amen. Prayer Of Confession Steadfast God, the world is opposed to you. We should not be surprised to discover that the world is opposed to ...
Call To Worship Let the morning star of glory rise in your hearts as we gather humbly at the foot of God's holy mountain of prayer. Collect Lord, we know you listen to us. Today we strive to listen to you. We pledge to begin by listening to those who might be considered by the foolish to be the least of your servants - the poor, the powerless, the suffering, the very young, the very old. In their words, in their wishes and dreams, in their hopes and needs, we strive to see dimly what you see clearly. In ...
"If I go down, I'm taking you down with me." We've all heard that line. It's been used in movies and on television shows. We've seen it written in books and even in real-life news articles. Maybe we've even had it said directly to us. Somebody is in big trouble, and they are not going to face the punishment without involving someone else in their suffering. Sometimes there's even a line that follows: "That's not just a threat; it's a promise," just to let us know that they are not bluffing. If they are ...
A mouse was once riding on the back of an elephant, and the pair went across a rickety bridge. As might be expected, the bridge shook and rattled. When the duo had successfully navigated the bridge, the mouse exclaimed, "My, oh my, we certainly made that bridge shake, didn't we?" It is all too common an experience to meet people who sound as if they are somehow related to that mouse. People who brag loudly about their successes, their skills, the ways they are crucial to the history of the world, or at ...
The prophet Habakkuk is not considered to be one of the major prophets. He is known primarily for one line, which was read for us in the Old Testament lesson. "The righteous shall live by faith." That is the source of Paul's famous phrase found in his Letter to the Romans particularly, "The just shall live by faith." It became a battle cry for the Reformation, and it came originally from Habakkuk. But in this same passage is a wonderful phrase that I thought was appropriate for the Fourth of July: "For ...
I imagine those of you who have been hosts at a wedding reception, or anticipate doing that sometime in the future, were interested in the Gospel lesson for this morning, where Jesus attends a wedding and turns the water into wine, not only producing the finest of vintages, but also covering for the host’s bad planning. The host was able to tell his guests, "Well, I was just reserving the best for the last." Someone suggested the title of this sermon ought to be, "No Wine before Its Time," which is clever ...
I selected this lovely hymn this morning, "Once in Royal David's City," because of its reference to the childhood of Jesus. It is one of the few places where you will find any reference to the fact that he grew up the way we have to. The third verse reads, "Jesus is our childhood's pattern; day by day, like us he grew." The hymn was part of a fascinating project, one of a series of hymns written by Cecil Alexander, back in 1848, to teach children the meaning of the Apostles' Creed. "Once in Royal David's ...
