If you have abandoned one faith, do not abandon all faith. There is always an alternative to the faith we lose. Or is it the same faith under another mask?

Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.

I got the bill for my surgery. Now I know what those doctors were wearing masks for.

The best mask for demoralization is daring.

Without wearing any mask we are conscious of, we have a special face for each friend.

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. There is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

... and relationships, the way we treat others, the way we look at what we most value. While many of us continue to at least adjust to minor changes, such as working from home, doing church in new ways, changing exercise routines, eating on porches, wearing masks, learning to enjoy the simpler things in life; for others, COVID has felt like a wicked curse. Huge numbers of people are completely out of work and trying to make ends meet in any way they can. Retirees have seen their stocks fall and their savings ...

... . Some have said that when Jesus illustrated that men do their deeds in the dark, that he was referring to Nicodemus coming at night in the veil of darkness. Although his approach to Jesus was not as the evil religious leaders would intend, it was still to mask his approach. He loved his position and the perks that came with it more than the answer he received. When Nicodemus heard he would need a new spiritual birth, he could not conceive it. He was a learned Rabbi, a religious leader of the Jewish people ...

... come. Still, despite our desire for change, for us, it can’t come fast enough. Hospitals remain filled to the brim with patients, both ill and dying. Urgent care centers and testing centers continue to try to keep up with cases. We continue to wear masks and to socially distance, but we are growing weary. We are in urgent need of reprieve, and so our scientists and manufacturers continue to work feverishly in order to deliver the maximum amount of vaccines in record time, hoping to slow the spread and put ...

... . Tiktok’s popular “I can do it” video for example looks at our human desires and penchant for doing things we don’t want to do but do anyway, the things we want to fix about ourselves and our lives but struggle with, the things about ourselves that we grieve, mask, or make us feel badly and help us to realize that we are not alone in this feeling. We can embrace human emotions and know we all have them. Even if we mess up, even if we feel awful, it’s not who we are. We are still okay. Tiktok ...

... to be forced to account for one's movements. But often in marriage, one awakes to the realization that what one earlier perceived as a possible limitation or burden becomes true freedom, great joy. In marriage, one is free from the little games, the masks one must wear before others. Now, since fidelity is promised forever, no matter what, the promise of marriage has freed us rather than restricted us. What was once perceived as burden is really a great blessing. More than that, we discover, in keeping the ...

... God. It's only through Christ that we can be cleaned up and made presentable before God. It's only through Christ that we can be forgiven. The Son of God stands there with arms outstretched in invitation; a welcoming smile upon his face and no sign of a gas mask. He doesn't care how bad you stink. He doesn't care how far away you have drifted. All Christ cares about is that you have turned to him. As one stinker to another, we've all slapped the skunk and the only one who can get us out of ...

It happened so fast I hadn’t absorbed it all. Who was that masked woman? As I headed down our street I couldn’t help marveling. Here, seemingly out of nowhere, was a person who saw me struggling and was able to identify with me. Here was someone with the presence of mind to simply stop and be of some assistance. A sense of ...

... than we wanted and cry, ''Depart from me!'' You were warned. ''It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.'' Why could he not leave Peter with his nets, fishing? Why could he not let us be, content with our little lies, masks fixed firmly in place, quite happy to play our games. As Eliot declared, ''Mankind cannot accept too much reality.'' Of course, I'm a preacher, one accustomed to climbing out and dancing on this shaky scaffolding once a week from eleven 'till noon. But some Sundays ...

... our hearts. We can trust Jesus to guide us when we are confronted by lies. In our scripture for today, when Jesus tells his disciples to be careful not to be led astray, he is warning them about liars, skilled liars, hard-to-identify liars, liars masked as “good people,” liars who come in the very name of Jesus! These are people who say they know something you don’t, who challenge your faith and your focus, who present a “better way.” How does Jesus train his disciples to recognize and avoid liars ...

Five days after the awful earthquakes of Mexico City many years ago, the search for survivors was called off. Then beneath the ruins of a hospital, the cry of a newborn baby was heard. Rescue workers donned face masks, pinned on name tags in case they were buried, rushed into the rubble, and began digging with their hands. Underneath the tangled mass of steel and concrete were five babies miraculously well and alive. As one worker said, “The babies’ cries motivated us.” What does it take to motivate ...

You know to stay calm in a crisis, and you know what to do if stones give way or if your mask slips. Whether you climb high or go deep, you are ready. In a sense, this kind of readiness is what Jesus is describing to his disciples in our scripture for today. In his parable, Jesus depicts a sower (God) sowing seeds of grace over the entire terrain (the ...
