Why Should I Be the Lucky One

Snoopy, that “hound of heaven” in Charles Schultz’s “Peanuts” cartoon, tell us human beings important things about life.  On one occasion, he moves into deep contemplation as he watches Charlie Brown and Linus walk by.  He says to himself, “I wonder why some of us were born dogs while others were born people.  Is it just pure chance or what is it?  Somehow the whole thing doesn’t seem fair.”  And then he emerges from his meditation and goes tripping away with one concluding question, “Why should I have been the lucky one?”

To know and to feel that I am lucky to be me is one of life’s greatest experiences.  To know that I am limited, but also gifted, and that such is the case with every human being is one of life’s greatest revelations.  We will never know much joy or find the fullness life offers until we are all not only comfortable with ourselves but feel good about being who we are.
