Jesus’ first question, How is it?… does not imply that he thinks that the Christ is not supposed to be a descendant of David, but it asks how he can be in light of Ps. 110:1, a psalm attributed to David and therefore cited by Jesus as potentially having messianic significance: “The Lord [God] said to my Lord [the Christ] …” That is, Jesus asks, “How can the Messiah [or Christ] be both David’s Son [as held in popular opinion and suggested in certain prophetic passages] and lord [as David himself states in Ps. 110:1]?” (Marshall, p. 745).
