“Pride is concerned with who is right. Humility is concerned with what is right.” This anonymous quote cuts to the center of our Maundy Thursday lesson. Jesus had been teaching the disciples about humility inside the kingdom of God. That was a lesson they had struggled with. After all their time together, you may remember, the brothers James and John had come to him and asked that Jesus do for them whatever they requested. Let’s look at that passage.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

“What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
