I’m a fan of the Peanuts cartoon strip. I think Charles Schultz did a marvelous job tapping into the human experience with the kids he drew over the years. There’s one that especially stands out to me because I think it cuts deeply to what it’s like to experience disappointment. I’ll describe the strip for you. Imagine Charlie Brown sitting on a bench at school. His lunch bag is next to him. In the first panel he says, “There’s that little red-haired girl. She’s handing out valentines.” The next panel shows an excited, eager Charlie Brown as he says, “She’s handing them out to all her friends … She’s handing them out one by one … She’s handing them out … She’s still handing them out …” The third panel shows Charlie Brown sitting back, his shoulders slumped.
