Abraham Entertains Three Messengers from Heaven: It is important to interpret this account in tandem with the story of the destruction of Sodom. Abraham’s position with God contrasts with the fate of his nephew Lot. Abraham is about to realize God’s promise for an heir through Sarah. Conversely, Lot’s dream of becoming a citizen of Sodom is about to be shattered. Having separated from Abraham to pursue wealth and pleasure, Lot will lose all his possessions. By contrast, Abraham is increasing in wealth and reputation because of God’s blessing in his life.
