Chapter 14 returns to the final siege of Jerusalem. Besides adding some particulars omitted in chapter 12, chapter 14 has a different purpose. Both chapters show that much more is at stake than the defense of Jerusalem and the destruction of the enemy. In chapter 12 the impact of Christ’s coming brings God’s people to repentance and faith. In chapter 14 Christ’s coming is seen in its impact on the world at large, in the establishment of a worldwide kingdom where Christ alone is king. The repentance of Israel in chapter 12 is a prerequisite for her proper role in the Messiah’s world kingdom.
