Theme: God's unifying Spirit

Exegetical note
Luke's account of, in effect, the birthday of the Church at Pentecost, presents the gift of tongues as something different from what Paul would deal with later. Here, actual languages are uttered, which at the same time fulfill prophecy (specifically Joel's) and reverse the effects of the Babel event: language, which once marked human alienation, now becomes a Spirit-given vehicle that overcomes all human estrangement and unifies.
