With the assassination of his father in a palace coup, Uzziah comes to the throne at age sixteen (26:1–5). The Chronicler evaluates Uzziah (called Azariah in the book of Kings; cf. 2 Kings 14:21) positively, noting that he did right in the eyes of Yahweh, but qualifying this by reference to the mentoring influence of an otherwise unknown figure named Zechariah. In keeping with the Chronicler’s theological principles, such righteous behavior is rewarded with prosperity, exemplified in Uzziah’s signature achievement of rebuilding Elath, an Israelite southern seaport on the Gulf of Aqaba.
