In John Bunyan’s classic Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian has finally learned not to get off the road for any reason. He has paid dearly to learn faithfulness to the path laid out in God’s word. As he clears a high hill, he sees two large lions waiting on the road ahead. He moves forward down the road, repeating to himself, “Stay on the road, stay on the road,” even as he wonders what he should do. As he stays on the road and draws closer to the lions, he discovers the way of escape. He sees that the lions are actually beside the road and chained so that if he walks in the middle of the road he will be safe. Pilgrim does pass safely beneath the lion’s breath and goes on down the road to the Celestial City.
