Resisting Progress

According to historians, when the newfangled invention of electric lights were first installed in the White House, President and Mrs. Benjamin Harrison were so intimidated by the power of electricity they didn't dare touch the light switches. If there were no servants around to turn off the lights when the Harrisons went to bed, they slept with them on. And, if the lights were off, they stayed off until one of the staff turned them back on.
