Gospel Note
The juxtaposition of Peter's confession (vv. 18-22) and Jesus' saying on discipleship (vv. 23-24) is unique to Luke, and is indicative of just how evitable he saw self-denial and self-sacrifice to be for the true follower of the Christ. His addition of the word "daily" to his Marcan source further shows that he saw (and wanted his Christian contemporaries to see) such suffering as an ongoing part of the church's mission.
