Gospel Note
Although the wording of v. 47a is ambiguous, read in light of the parable of the two creditors that precedes it (vv. 41-43), it is clear that the point of Luke's version of this incident is that the (unnamed) woman loved much because she had been forgiven, i.e., that love is a consequence of forgiveness rather than a pre-condition for it.
