Gospel Note
In an account that both echoes and parallels that of Elijah's miracle in the First Lesson (1 Kings 17:17-24), Luke is apparently drawing attention to Jesus' role as prophet and connecting him to old Testament prophetic tradition. Here as there, however, the point is not merely to raise or reinforce the status of the one in that position, but to show the presence and power of God at work in him and his activity.
