Exegetical Note
The warning of Amos is against the presumption of those among his own people who were looking forward to "the day of the Lord" - i.e., Jahweh's ultimate eschatological act on their behalf - with great anticipation. His suggestion is that those who want it most to come are those who understand it least, for t will be an event of darkness and gloom (i.e., catastrophe) for everyone.
