Gospel Note
Flying in the face of conventional wisdom in any age, the parable contained in this passage (vv. 7-10) asserts that obedient service to God and God's coming reign is actually owned and expected, and not something to be rewarded. The fact that the servants declare themselves "unworthy" comports with Paul's view of salvation as a gift bestowed upon the undeserving unrighteous.
