Theme: Judgment upon the Church

Exegetical note
Jesus' warnings here about the cost of discipleship - including cross-bearing and loss of life - culminate in the apocalyptic vision of the Son of Man coming in glory with angels to reward (or punish), not humanity in general, but the disciples, and precisely on the basis of their performance. This is a particularly Matthean warning to the Church of his own day.
