First Lesson: 2 Samuel 23:1-7

Theme: The benefits of a covenantal relationship

Exegetical Note
The psalm contained in this passage and presented as "the last words of David," is in praise, not so much of God, but of David’s household, specifically for its having lived in consonance with God and God’s "everlasting covenant," which has led to order, security, and prosperity. Particularly extolled is David’s having ruled justly and "in the fear of God."

Call to Worship
Leader: There are two basic ways to live in the world: in harmony with God or in rebellion against God.
