COMMENTARY
Lesson 1: 2 Samuel 11:1-15 (C)
King David has consolidated his power and no longer personally engages in the risky task of doing battle with his enemies. Getting up from his afternoon nap, he surveys his capital from his balcony, when he spies a beautiful woman taking her bath; it is Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, one of David's valiant fighters. He has her brought to his palace and has sex with her. When she sends word that she is pregnant, David attempts to cover his sin by having Uriah take a leave from battle, that he might have intercourse with his wife. Uriah adheres to the laws of holy war and refuses to lie with his wife while others are doing battle. David sends a letter to Joab, his general, t…
