Playing at Little Games

Tonight, Shanghai is burning,
And we’re dying, too.
What bomb more surely mortal
Than death inside of you?
For some men die by shrapnel,
And some go down in flames,
But most men perish inch by inch,
In play at little games.

What could be more descriptive of our flabby indifference  -- the little games we play from day to day, our obsession with material security, our neurotic efforts to be accepted by the crowd, the fanatical devotion we give to seeking entertainment.  But most men perish inch by inch in play at little games.

The daily routine interests of our lives tell the story of who we really are.  How we spend our money, our time, our energy, what we read, what we give our attention to, are all the tell-tale marks of who we are.  Take a look at yourself.  Are you perishing inch by inch in play at little games?
