Immediately following the Pentecost event, this section points to the powerful acts of the Holy Spirit through the hands of the apostles. The miracle performed by Peter provides the occasion for two speeches that define both the continuing role of the risen Jesus and the opposition by Jewish leadership. Earlier, in his Pentecost speech, Peter pointed to the fulfillment of God’s promise that he “will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below” (2:19; see Joel 2:30). In light of this miracle (3:1–10) Peter demonstrates the impact of such a fulfillment in the history of the church.
