Theme: God's life-giving Spirit
Exegetical Note
Deutero-Isaiah here uses poetic nature-imagery to express hope for the exiled and captive people of Judah to be restored from Babylonian captivity to their own Palestine. The image of God's Spirit as a life-giving water (rain?) poured out onto an arid soil (a dire situation) to revitalize a "parched" (hopeless) people is especially appropriate for Pentecost.
