Lydia’s status as a wealthy and independent woman is contrasted with that of the “female slave” who is manipulated by her owner (16:16–18). While she is a slave of the evil spirit, she recognizes that the apostles are “servants of the Most High God,” a title that points to the supreme authority of God and the risen Lord (cf. Acts 7:48).
