First Lesson: Isaiah 42:1-9

Exegetical Note
The first four verses here comprise the so-called "First Servant Song" of Second Isaiah, verses 5-9 being a kind of elaboration upon it. Whatever its original referent, from a Christological perspective, the passage bespeaks Jesus and his ministry from baptism to crucifixion, with a special emphasis on the work of Christ (including the cross) as a ministry of justice (or "righteousness").
