This reading gives as compact and compressed an expression of the whole gospel as anywhere in the New Testament. In these few verses, Jesus' role as an authoritative, compelling, charismatic preacher is defined; the kernel of the gospel message is expressed; and "drop-everything" discipleship the result of seeing Jesus and hearing his message is described.
Mark's gospel presents what is essentially its own prologue in 1:2-13. The theological stage is set for the story of Jesus' ministry by first describing John the Baptist's mission and message, then Jesus' baptism at John's hands, and finally Satan's unsuccessful attempts to tempt Jesus away from obedience to God.
