Exegetical Note
In a manner uncharacteristic of the Old Testament, Jeremiah here depicts God, not as calling Israel or Judah back to the Mosaic covenant, but as giving up on the law as hopelessly broken, and announcing a future new covenant, not of external knowledge of and obedience to tablets and codes, but of internal responsiveness to the will of God instilled in human hearts.
