Gospel Note
The devil's temptation of Jesus in the desert, as depicted by Luke, is a veritable "battle of the Titans," each of whom rallies Scripture to support his case. In the end, the devil departs "until an opportune time" (which for Luke means the pre-Passion period), having been put off by Jesus' single-minded commitment to his mission and ministry.
