The text for today is the second half of a larger section (20:1-31) which recounts the events surrounding the discovery of the empty tomb (vv.1-10) and the appearance of Jesus to Mary Magdalene (vv.11-18), the disciples (vv.19-23), and to Thomas (vv.24-31).
John has already unveiled the recognition scene which occurred between Mary and Jesus. He now provides further information as to the manner and location of his first revelation to the disciples. The gang was all there (except for Judas and Thomas) meeting in a house behind locked doors, cowering in "fear of the Jews" (v.19). It cannot be surmised that, although fearful for their lives, they at least were buoyed by the knowledge that Jesus was alive.
