14:27–31 This discussion follows the account of the meal both in Mark and in the Matthew 26:31–35 parallel. Luke 22:31–34 is a variant tradition of the discussion. The present passage shows Jesus anticipating the collapse of his followers, which is described in 14:50 and 14:66–72. But it also looks beyond this collapse to Jesus’ resurrection (v. 28) and to a reunion and reaffirmation of the disciples, referred to in 16:7. In other words, the effect and intent of the passage in its present setting seems to be to show that the failure of the disciples was foreseen by Jesus and was understood as prophesied (v. 27) in the OT. This means that their failure was not a failure in the plan of God, however it might seem so at first. Further, the passage anticipates that the activity of the disciples…
