Focus on Judah and His Famous Descendants: Whereas the Chronicler merely introduced the twelve sons of Israel by name in verses 2:1–2, the verses that follow each focus on one of these sons. First Chronicles 2:3–4:23 focuses particularly on the descendants of Judah. The reader familiar with Israelite history would know the presentation of the Deuteronomistic History that the united Israel under David and Solomon comprised twelve tribes, each originating from one of the sons of Jacob/Israel. The genealogies presented by the Chronicler should therefore not be read as the family lists of a few individuals, but rather as a kind of social-identity map.
