In 1950 children’s author Elois Jarvis McGraw, winner of three Newberry Medals, wrote an outstanding book called Sawdust in His Shoes. The story follows young Joe Lang, who is raised in a 3rd generation circus family. At already 15, he has become an accomplished bareback rider and acrobat. When his father, a lion tamer, is killed by one of his animals, Joe becomes an orphan. As the court deliberates what should become of young Joe, he runs away and comes upon a farming family who kindly takes him in. Due to his fear of bias and judgment, he tries his best to hide his circus roots and forget about his past, until one day, he instinctively reveals his acrobatic talent while saving someone’s life.
