Priests are held to special standards in order to keep their holiness separate from impurities of various kinds (21:1–9). They are to properly represent God and not profane his name or reputation (21:6; 22:2). Priests are forbidden to engage in pagan mourning practices (21:5; cf. 19:27–28) and prohibited from even participating in burying the dead and thereby incurring corpse contamination, except for with close blood relatives (21:1–4). Their holiness (21:8) prevents them from marrying women who have been promiscuous, “pierced” or “profaned” (i.e., probably raped), or divorced (21:7).
