63:1–6 The links with 59:15b–20 here are evident. Once again Yahweh looks and sees no one acting in relation to wrongdoing, so comes to act as a warrior clothed in battle garb and acting in wrath for the cause of vengeance, tsedaqah, redemption, and salvation. What is new here is the explicit connection with Edom and Bozrah. There may be several ways in which that is significant. It is the direction from which the warrior Yahweh comes to act on the people’s behalf in Judges 5:4–5. It corresponds to chapter 34, which also spoke of a day of vengeance (v. 4). If that denoted the punishment of Edom, it is here more explicit that, if Edom is being punished it is as a representative for peoples in general (v. 6). The explicit bloodiness of the scene also c…
