Theme: A promised prophet in the mold of Moses
Exegetical Note
Following immediately after a warning against pagan "diviners and soothsayers," in this passage Moses is quoted as promising a true mediator of God’s Word (i.e., one like himself), whose messages the people must heed voluntarily or be forced to do so by God. For obvious reasons, Christian interpreters have seen here a futuristic and messianic reference to Jesus.
