Fear Is a Great Motivator

Have you heard the story of the frog who fell into a deep rut and, try as he might, he could not get out? Mrs. Frog, standing above the rut, admonished, cajoled, beckoned, and belittled him: "Get out, come on, let's go." But Mr. Frog, down in the deep rut, said simply that he couldn't. "I've tried everything, and there is no way I can get out of this rut." So Mrs. Frog left him there and hopped on down to the pond. A few minutes later, however, Mr. Frog appeared beside her on their favorite lily pad. "I thought you said you couldn't get out," she said. He responded, "A big truck came along and I had to."

Fear is a great motivator. It is said that Jack Nicklaus, the great golfer, learned the secret of channeling fear, so that when the stakes were highest when other golfers were choking Nicklaus was at his best. Fear can be a great motivator. But fear can also be a terrible tyrant.
