Theme: God's compassion for the captive
Exegetical Note
Following the Second Servant Song (vv. 1-6 or 1-7), this poetic passage announces confidently (though no doubt proleptically) God's compassion and comfort for an afflicted people as a fait accompli in "a time of favor" and "a day of salvation." The obvious allusion is to the Exodus, the perennial model for God's redemptive activity on behalf of all who are captive to any sort of enslavement.
