Theme: God's glory for Galilee's gloom
Exegetical Note
First Isaiah, writing in the context of the Assyrian conquest of Galilee, nevertheless speaks confidently of God's glorious restoration. In doing so, he equates the current captivity with the darkness of night and the anticipated liberation with the light of day. As a reading after the Epiphany, the passage's parallel with the beginning of Jesus' ministry in Galilee is striking.
