Chapter 21 stands in such discontinuity with the rest of John's Gospel, in content if not in style, that it is generally regarded as an anticlimactic appendix. The miracle related in verses 4-8 is reminiscent (at least) of the one in Luke 5:1-11 as part of Jesus' earthly ministry.
